INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY.
It’s November 19th., the 21st. Anniversary of “International Men’s Day” and one could imbue a certain degree of maturity to this event, a “Coming of Age” celebration.
This post, in a humble way, acknowledges its importance as a fact and also honours the ones who planted this visionary seed, nurtured its growth over the years, and allowed it to acquire the achievement of its current stature and relevance.
November 19th. was chosen as a tribute to the birthday of the father of one of the prime movers of this event, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh Ph.D., who nurtured the idea planted by Thomas Oaster several years before.
One cannot help but laud some of the objectives of the organization which include:
• Improving Gender relations between men and women.
• Addressing the unique problems and challenges that men face.
• Promoting Gender equality.
• Highlighting and promoting healthy and positive male role models.
• Creating, a safer better world.
The overarching theme for this year’s commemoration is “Better Health for Men and Boys”, an opportunity for appreciation and celebration as they make their contributions towards a better society.
These are exceedingly challenging times. One could say mankind is being besieged by a plethora of crises unprecedented in scope and severity, for which there are no ready responses.
Nature seems unduly perturbed, with a viral pandemic, raging seas, unrelenting fires and the wrath of human emotions fulminating without a pause.
The world of politics, governments and finance reveals the underbelly of a system that has long extolled what Riane Eisler in her book “The Chalice and The Blade” calls a Domination model.
In this universe, competition is king, losers are necessary collateral damage for the “winners”, who ruthlessly seek the pinnacle of a dog-eat-dog hierarchy.
Caring, compassion and the goodwill of the community at large are sacrificed on the altars of power and greed. One could submit that the demons of human nature have been released and are running amuck, leaving death and destruction in their wake.
What’s the answer ?
The reflex response could be that Patriarchy has been the garden of Eden for the genesis of this Domination model. The flaccid presentation that Matriarchy would suffice to right the consequential wrongs might have some significance elsewhere but as Eisler asserts, both Matriarchy and Patriarchy are two sides of the same Domination coin, with identical predictable outcomes.
Where’s the healing, one is invited to ask ?
Eisler maintains that the Partnership model has withstood a 30,000-year plus test of time with remarkable results, and offers sane, meaningful humanitarian benefits.
In the Partnership model co-operation displaces competition.
Egalitarianism trumps hierarchies.
The hydra-headed monsters of resentment, scarcity, separation and anger are dispatched.
Here “We” supplants the “I” and many voices participate in singing the anthem of humanity.
So it is “International Men’s Day”. with the theme of healing “Better health for Men and Boys”.
Can anyone imagine a healthier solution than releasing the shackles of toxic Domination enslavement ?
Doesn’t the freedom, expansion, creativity and enhanced quality of life experiences of the Partnership model suggest a superior and more healthy alternative ?
We all have a choice to make. Our lives, that of our children, their children and their children’s children depend on intelligent decisions made now.
DOMINATION OR PARTNERSHIPS ?
